Creating your first scrapbook page

You have decided to build an album, that's the first step. Now what?

Learn how to create your first page or album with the following simple steps.

Organize and sort your Photos

The most important piece of your scrapbook is photos. If you are having trouble deciding on a theme for your page, start carrying your camera with you everywhere you go and take as many pictures as you can. Organize the photos in a photo box divided with index cards that label each group. This makes it much easier to decide on a final theme.

Get your supplies together and choose a color scheme

Color plays a huge role in the overall look of your page. It is best to choose between two to four colors that will work well with your photos.

prepare layout

It is best to layout all photos and other page elements before you begin cropping and pasting your photos. You can play with many different layouts and ideas on the page to see which one works best with your photos. Standard size is a 12 x 12, but there are smaller and larger sized albums. Most pages include a title or journaling which provides captions and meaning to your photos. After you have decided on a final layout you can crop your pictures.


Your pages can be as simple or complex as you want them to be. Some techniques to enhance your pages include photo matting, which provides a separation from the paper a focal point for your picture. Other techniques include the use of stickers, rubber stamps, ribbons, borders, and decorative letters.

Put it all together

Once you have decided on your final layout, it is time to put it all together. Use an acid free adhesive and begin gluing your photos and other enhancements to the page. That's it! You have created your first page.
